Ornamental ivy, Hedera helix<\/em> \u2018Spinosa\u2019,<\/strong> is half dwarf and half shrubby, with many branches. The stems are purplish-green, with internodes of 0.5 to 2.0 cm, often very thick (even on young plants). Sometimes the stems are flattened and swollen near the node, merging into the broad base of the petiole.<\/p>

The light green leaves are either unlobed, or three-lobed in older leaves, and extremely variable in shape. Variations include a fan shape. Some of the youngest leaves will be oval and ovoid. Some will have a raised cleft. The surface is often rough but some leaves are remarkably smooth.<\/p>
